Oliver Stone’s satirical biopic of George W. Bush is a surprisingly compassionate, almost sympathetic portrait of the 43rd president of the United States. Brilliantly impersonated by Josh Brolin, Bush is shown in W. at three stages of his life: his dissolute youth and years of business failures, his successful efforts to turn his life around the age of 40, and finally his presidency. Stone’s even-handedness probably won’t win applause from either side of America’s partisan divide – one half will probably feel his been too easy on him, while the other half will never forgive Stone for portraying Bush as something of a buffoon.
